The Trafalgar

This tiny Wimbledon pub has been around since at least 1868, when the area was known as "the Rockery" because of its overcrowded, run down and unsanitary housing. Back in the early 1900s, the Trafalgar attracted a very different crowd from the one it does today. It was known for a "rough" clientele and earned the nickname "Threepenny Hop", as men working on the nearby Merton Abbey railway line would hop over the station fence for a pint! Covid hit this community hub hard, forcing it to close in 2021. In 2023, passionate publican Oli, whose family had been regulars for years, rolled up their sleeves and took it over to give the locals their beloved pub back. The place was carefully refurbished while respecting the pub's essence for the most dedicated pub purists. No modern décor here! Expect old school hanging lamps, wooden furniture, numerous beer mats covering the ceiling, and... pictures of ships from the Battle of Trafalgar, (of course!).
Oli's dedication to the pub is second to none. They have spent years standing up to property developers to keep the place as a pub. Their perseverance led to the now well-known "Save the Traf" campaign, which aims to raise funds to buy the freehold and keep the pub as a community hub in the long term. Hats off to them!
