A Victorian gem with gangster tales and star-studded stages

Tucked away in Borough, this independent pub is set in a Grade II listed Victorian building, believed to date back to around 1892, though it could be even older.
The Roebuck has travelled through time with its fair share of stories, shaped by both famous and infamous visitors. Upstairs, the stage has welcomed icons like Charlie Chaplin, Ed Sheeran, Kate Tempest and the British Jazz orchestra Loose Tubes. But this pub isn’t just tied to artistic legends. It has deep links to London’s gangster history too, having once been owned by the notorious Richardson crime gang. The building also stands next to a red telephone box marking the spot where money from the Great Train Robbery was discovered!
Today, you’d never guess this charming place had such a gritty past. Red leather seats, wooden floors and classic furnishings create a warm and welcoming feel. With large windows on every side, natural light floods the space all day, thanks to the building’s standalone position.

Leading the way in sustainability

Sustainability is taken seriously at the Roebuck, with a dedicated “Green Team” bringing together staff from every department to improve their eco-friendly practices. It’s also no surprise the pub is a proud member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, a campaign helping diners eat their way to a better food future. The team’s commitment has earned multiple awards, including the One Planet Plate for their beef burger, which replaces a third of the meat with mushrooms and lentils to reduce its carbon footprint. In 2023, they were also named Best Sustainable Gastro Pub in South London. Kudos to them!
