Stepney's best-kept secret
Tucked away on a hidden street in Stepney, this little-known backstreet treasure built in 1881 is easily missed unless you are fortunate enough to stumble upon it. The handsome façade hints at the gregarious interior charm that awaits within this historic Aylward Street Cockney boozer. And it doesn't disappoint as visitors lucky enough to meet the pubs acquaintance won't be surprised by an immense feeling of peacefulness as the threshold is crossed.
With its wooden interior, vintage décor, and small lamps casting a soft yellow glow, every detail makes this place uniquely inviting. It's the kind of haven where you’ll want to linger for hours, far from the hustle and bustle of busy city life. The numerous photographs and drawings on the walls, sharing stories of the area, add to the charm, as does the vintage Singer sewing machine, which belonged to a former much-loved Landlady.
The hostelry is cherished by it loyal band of locals, so much so that one of them even gifted a piano, which you can find in the old saloon bar. Cosy up near the fireplace or have a chat with amiable local face Terry the Fish who loves to share stories about the area's history.
Cheers to cheap pints and a good time!
Even though the area has been suffering for years from a spike in housing prices and pints, the Peacock resists and still offers affordable prices for all, allowing people from all walks of life to have a good time. Here, you can still find pints for £5 or less, including Carlsberg, Fosters, John Smiths, and Orchard View Cider.
