The pub that had more lives than any cat ever could
Originally built in 1825, this Camberwell building has lived many lives. From traditional watering hole to private residence for a wealthy entomologist (now you know why the pub's sign features an insect!), it eventually returned to its roots as a pub, and the entomologist's stables were transformed into a tennis court. Over the years, the place has gone by many names, including the Grove House Tavern, Ye Olde Grove Tavern and the Grand Union, before circling back to its original identity, the Grove House Tavern. And we would not have it any other way! As if that journey was not colourful enough, the entire structure was once demolished and rebuilt in the distinctive Empire mansard style it has today. Now, the Grove House Tavern is a favourite with a mix of friendly local regulars, NHS staff from King’s College Hospital, art students from UAL and curious foodies who come for Mondo’s savoury sandwiches paired with a proper pint.
