A Fulham spot for explorers at heart
First opened in 1883 as the Wilton Arms, this pub has stood on Dawes Road ever since and witnessed the rapid growth of the area during the Victorian period, as London’s railway network expanded and housing was built for workers and middle class.
After closing in 2013, it reopened as the Captain Cook, named after James Cook, a tribute to the then landlords’ New Zealand origins. You can still spot the love for discovery and travel, with a large planisphere covering an entire wall, an imposing rudder beside the bar, and a portrait of Cook watching over guests as they unwind after a day of work or laugh with friends.
The current landlady, affable Susie, has fully embraced this exploratory mindset, which she carries effortlessly given her Spanish roots. Expect Spanish touches with tapas, sangria and regular flamenco shows. Looking for something more traditional? Fear not, the Sunday roast is considered one of the best in Fulham, so the team won’t let you down.

Yes, the Captain Cook is a proper English pub, but with a strong Spanish presence in the team, including Susie, the landlady, and Silvia, her right hand, you won’t be surprised to see regulars walk through the door and greet them with ‘¡Hola!’.
