A proper family-owned East End boozer

Opened in 1860, this hard to miss bright orange painted pub has watched Bow evolve through the decades and still stands proudly today. Unique to the pub, there is said to be a ghost that has lived here since 1974. Known as the ‘phantom flusher’, expect this cheeky ghost to flush the toilet just when you’re at your most vulnerable.
Les, born and bred in the East End, took over the pub and turned it into a real family affair, with siblings all lending a hand. Watch out for the classic Cockney sayings above the bar and you’ll know you’re in the right place!
Dean, Les’ nephew, grew up in the pub, watching his family’s dedication first-hand. That passion proved contagious, leading him to start behind the bar at 18 and take over after the pandemic. Since then, the pub has become a welcoming and inclusive spot, hosting everything from drag shows and quizzes to karaoke nights. Come on a match day, and you might just bump into a crowd of West Ham fans gathering to celebrate a win, or drink away the pain of a loss together.

Theatre at the Bow Bells, independent Cockney pub in East London

Pints, plays and a bit of magic

Since 2026, the pub has hosted the Pearly Queen, a queer and inclusive theatre that presents plays, shows, stand-up comedy, cabarets and comedy events from local talent. This unusual concept came from two regulars, passionate about theatre and live performance, who decided to invest in the Bow Bells to create this artistic hub, and it has been a success from day one!
