Updated: Nov 24, 2023

What better way to combat the heat than a cold drink at a local beer garden?

Drinking In the Heat

It’s another roasting day in London. The sun is beating down and there’s no break from the stifling heat. With summer having reached London in full force, there is nothing as refreshing as a cold drink at your favourite pub to help you cool down.

Still, there’s a part of us that longs to be outside. We spend most of our time indoors – at home, at work, running errands. But what if you could have them both – be outside in a cooling environment and have a cold pint? By visiting a local beer garden, you can enjoy a drink in the fresh air, with your choice of warm sun, a cool breeze, or both. These independent pubs’ beer gardens offer the perfect medium between relaxing at the pub and enjoying what the British summer has to offer.

It is our goal at CityStack to support independent pubs hit hard by the current economic crisis while simultaneously helping pub lovers socialise within their budget. We do this by providing a unique gift option: a £25 stack of beer mats that lets you get £100 worth of food and drink at 50+ independent pubs across London. Having been to hundreds of independent pubs across London, here are some of our favourite beer gardens. These warm sunny days will be over before we know it. So make the most of them by enjoying a pint at one of these independent pubs that just happen to have perfect spaces for appreciating the fleeting novelty that is good weather in the U.K. If any of these pubs strike your fancy, take a look at our gift pack for a good discount.

Our Favourites

This enchanting Irish pub is adorn in ivy, and settled nearby Finsbury Park. The Faltering Fullback’s beer garden is perfect for those who aren’t quite ready to relinquish their time outside. Situated on decks floating at various levels and intertwined with various plant life, this beer garden enables guests to enjoy the summer weather along with the magnitude of greenery that Finsbury Park has to offer. The pub also serves delicious Thai food, second only to its lively atmosphere.

A quaint family-owned Irish pub nestled in South London, Skehans has many amenities, but our favourite is the beer garden hidden in the back of the pub. Perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of London life, this veiled garden is the ideal place to have a pint, surrounded by palm trees and other beautiful foliage. In addition to having lively sports screenings, pub quizzes, and live music, Skehans also has a large menu, which includes Thai food, in addition to traditional pub food, as well as having vegan and vegetarian options.

This elegantly rustic pub in Dalston is owned by siblings Rosie and Rich, and is well known by its patrons for its live music, delicious food, and secluded outdoor space. Situated behind the pub, lies a charmingly concealed beer garden, hidden by lush trees and shrubs, perfect for a relaxing evening. Be warned though, this beer garden is filled on a first come first serve basis, so if you plan to take advantage of its beautiful setting during off-work hours, make sure you get there early!

After a strenuous legal battle over attempts to turn this historic pub into luxury flats, the Chesham Arms still stands thanks to the neighbourhood that fought in keeping it in its original form as a local landmark. Hidden on a quiet side street, this delightful pub is truly a hidden gem, with a quaint interior and entrancing beer garden in the back. Beautiful trees and brick work take up the garden, and its large options for seating means it’s perfect for you and your friends to enjoy the sunny weather with a cool drink and live music.

This trendy pub has an intriguing history, reflected in its decor and events. Having started out a pub which turned into a strip club, the Crown and Shuttle honours its history by hosting live drawing sessions featuring pole dancers. If, however, you prefer to spend your time outdoors, the pub also has a spacious beer garden adorned with fairy lights and plenty of plants for optimal summertime ambience. The Crown and Shuttle’s wide beer selection and dynamic environment ensures that it is always active.

Situated nearby Victoria Park, the Hawke offers gourmet food, with meals seemingly straight out of a Gordon Ramsay special, as well as beers, ciders, and traditional cocktails. Formerly known as Hector and Noble, the pub’s unpretentious interior is by no means a reflection of its vivacious patronage, or its delightful back garden. The beer garden offers a relaxed atmosphere, decorated with fairy lights, a variety of greenery, and a contemporary design, perfect for an evening out with friends.
